Catrina Vargo was a camper and worked as a counselor from 2003 to 2008. She sent us a letter about her camp experience. This is an excerpt from her letter.
“Camp Kon-O-Kwee Spencer is the reason I am who I am today. Being a camper, I learned how to be independent and stand on my own. I got to know who I truly was. I learned how to make friends and be a good friend. I learned to trust others and lean on those around you. As a counselor, I learned about responsibility. I learned to put others before myself during my selfish years of being a teenager. I learned the value of mentors and being a good role model. I learned to dance in the rain when things don’t always go as planned. I learned how to lead and use my voice. I learned how to listen and be empathetic even when you may not understand. I learned how to let go of control and just have fun. The reason I hold camp so dear is because I don’t think I would have learned all of that until many years later. Today I am a female engineer and found a career I love. Every day I have to put all those lessons I learned to the test and I am still so grateful.”
