PITTSBURGH —

The former Centre Avenue YMCA in Pittsburgh's Hill District neighborhood is almost 100-years old and was in rough shape. But $7 million and one year later, it's completely revamped and providing affordable housing to dozens of people.

A partnership between ACTION Housing and the YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh has brought new life into the former Centre Avenue YMCA building in the Hill District.

"It was looking its 99 years and was in serious need of some deep TLC, and the Y has a commitment, has always had a commitment to the community, and to the men that we serve here and it was very important to everyone involved that this happen," said Carolyn Grady, chief development officer for the Greater Pittsburgh YMCA.

Now known as Centre Avenue Housing, the renovated facility is home to 74 units of safe and affordable housing. They're all booked, and with a growing wait list, according to facility management.

"I was in tears the first time I came into the building after significant progress had been made," Grady said. "Not only that, but to see the attitude of the men. They waited so long and so patiently. They continued to live in this building while the renovations happened. They would move their rooms around so the work could happen. They are so appreciative."

It was a top-to-bottom rehab project that transformed and drastically improved the dilapidated building. From new bedrooms and bathrooms to a revamped dining area, to renovations to the original gym: it took $7 million to fix.

But the impact this renovated facility will now have on this community, officials say, is paramount.

"The mission of the YMCA is to put Christian principles into practice through programming that builds a healthy spirit, mind and body for all," Grady said. "And the most important words in that mission statement are the last two: for all. And this is for all."

More than just a facility, Centre Avenue Housing is also a brand new nonprofit that will help preserve this historic building for years to come.
