What are Esports?
Esports is a broader term that encompasses all of competitive video gaming. There are many styles of games that people play competitively. For the purposes of the Spencer Family YMCA, we are focusing on 3 games to start: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, NBA2K, Rocket League.
What are these games my kids will be playing?
Both Smash Bros and NBA2K are individual games that pits single player versus single player. In NBA2K, that is in a basketball game where each player picks a professional NBA team to play as. In Smash Bros, it is in a battle-royale style game with numerous characters across Nintendo and some other franchises. Though it is a fighting game, it is appropriate for younger ages.
Rocket League is a 3v3 team based soccer game, but the catch is you are playing soccer with cars. This game is best if your child has other friends who want to join with them, as it will be easier to make teams and create competitions.
What gaming systems do my kids need to play each game?
Smash Bros. Ultimate is a game exclusively for the Nintendo Switch. Rocket League is a cross-platform (cross-platform means you do not need the same system as your friend to play with them) game that you can play on Xbox, Playstation, Nintendo, or on a computer through the Steam client or Epic Games. NBA2K is available on Xbox, Playstation, Nintendo Switch, Windows and Apple Arcade. Unlike Rocket League though, it is not a cross-platform game.
Are these Esports going to be in person or virtual?
We are piloting this as a virtual program. So kids will not have to come to the Y to play and can do this from their own gaming systems. Our hope is to get to a point where we can have in-person gaming and tournaments in the future as this program grows.
How is this league going to be set up? When are practices? How does this work?
Practice starts Tuesday, September 14th with games happening Thursday evenings. Since this is an all-virtual league, the commissioners will be organizing the players through a chat application called Discord, and using a program called League Spot to organize games and tournaments. Since the league is virtual, there is flexibility for when participants can play their games, as long as they are finished before the following Monday evening before the next practice time Tuesday.
Who is running the leagues at the Spencer Y?
Joe Morgan, our Assistant Ice Rink Manager, and our Membership Director Russ Brown, are in charge of these leagues. Both men have experience with Esports and competitive gaming, and are excited to share that passion with others!
